Girl Reading a Book

1. Talk, Read, and Sing Every Day

At this age, your child’s vocabulary is growing rapidly. Talk to them throughout the day, describe what you’re doing, and ask simple questions. Read short, engaging books and sing songs together. These daily conversations build the listening and speaking skills needed for reading later on.

💡 Tip: Use short phrases and repeat key words. When your child says, “Car go,” you can respond, “Yes! The red car is going fast!” This expands their language naturally.

2. Play with Rhymes and Beginning Sounds

Children love silly rhymes! Rhyming teaches them to listen closely to sounds within words—an early form of phonemic awareness. Say rhymes like “cat-hat-bat” or “sun-fun-run,” and emphasize the beginning sounds.

💡 Try this: Ask, “Can you think of another word that sounds like ‘ball’?” Even if they make up a nonsense word, praise their effort. They’re learning to listen for sound patterns.

3. Introduce the Alphabet Naturally

There’s no need for flashcards or drills yet. Instead, point out letters in your child’s world—on cereal boxes, signs, or their name. Start by showing the first letter of their name and say the sound it makes.

💡 Example: “That’s M for Molly! M says /m/.” This helps them connect letters to sounds without pressure.

4. Let Your Child “Read” to You

Toddlers love to imitate what they see. Hand them a favorite book and let them turn pages and tell the story in their own words. Even if they’re just describing pictures, they’re learning that books hold meaning.

💡 Encourage it: Say, “Tell me what’s happening on this page.” This builds confidence and early storytelling skills—key parts of comprehension later on.

5. Make Books Part of Daily Routines

Create small reading rituals: a book before nap time, after lunch, or before bed. Keep books in easy reach so your child can choose them on their own. Regular exposure to books helps children associate reading with comfort and fun.

💡 Remember: The goal is not to force learning—it’s to make reading a natural, happy part of everyday life.
